Hate Crime

Citizens Advice Medway is a Hate Crime Reporting Centre. We work to raise awareness of Hate Crimes and Hate Incidents on a local and national level as well as support victims in terms of practical advice and emotional support.

What is a Hate Incident:

A Hate Incident is an incident which sees someone treated with prejudice in a manner that is not a criminal offence due to:

  • their race
  • their religion
  • their sexual orientation
  • their disability
  • their gender identity

What is a Hate Crime:

A Hate Crime is an illegal act motivated by hostility or prejudice towards someone based on their perceived or actual:

  • disability (including mental health or learning difficulty)
  • race, colour or nationality
  • religion or belief
  • sexual orientation
  • gender identity

Hate Crimes and Hate Incidents are on the rise but there is significant under-reporting and many victims suffer in silence for a long time.

Citizens Advice Medway is supporting victims to recover and ensuring their experiences are reported appropriately and in a confidential manner. Our practical support ranges from assisting to resolve neighbour disputes to taking legal action against perpetrators.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of a Hate Crime or Hate Incident, contact Citizens Advice Medway on 01634 383 760 from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.
