Volunteering

Citizens Advice Medway operates in large part due to our volunteer corps. We need volunteers every year to help us meet the demand for our services.  We have a wide variety of volunteer roles available at our centre including receptionists, advisers, project workers, trustees, administrators, research & campaign workers, and more!

If you are interested in joining our volunteer team, submit your request and a member of our team will be in touch to see what volunteer role you are best qualified for. Alternatively, email us at Volunteering@medwayadvice.org.uk.

When we look for volunteers, we are looking for skills and knowledge such as:

  • Being open-minded and non-judgmental,
  • Understanding the importance of confidentiality,
  • The ability to use IT,
  • The ability to work in a team,
  • Strong communication skills,
  • Basic math skills,
  • Fluency in reading and writing in English,
  • The ability to interpret information,
  • Being a good listener,
  • & those who enjoy helping others.

Below, please find a brief description of what each volunteer role entails.

Receptionists

Our receptionists are the public face of Citizens Advice Medway. They are the first face, and voice, our clients meet, and they connect them with the services we provide.

Their role is crucial in welcoming new, and returning, clients and providing information on our services.

Advisers

Our team of advisers carry out not only our Initial Checks with clients, but also perform more in-depth interviews with a client if needed. Their Initial Checks serve as a brief initial diagnosis after a client's inquiry and they are equipped to provide information and assistance straight away.

Project Workers

Each of our Project Workers are attached to a specific project run by us thanks to the generous funding provided by one of our partners. Given the requirements of this specific funding, only certain clients will be passed along to a Project Worker for assistance. During an Initial Check, an adviser will identify if you meet the criteria to be seen by a Project Worker.

Initial Checkers

Our service operates by asking everyone to undergo an Initial Check at the first point of contact. This could be over the phone, via an email, or in person.

Once our Initial Check team has diagnosed your problem, they'll either provide you with self-help information, signpost you to a specialist, or book you in for a full session with an Adviser or Project Worker.

Advice Session Supervisors

Supervisors play a key role in overseeing all the advice and administrative issues that surface during a one-on-one session. Other responsibilities include supporting the management team, interacting with members of the community, and overseeing the daily rota and service delivery. These supervisors take on all these responsibilities while ensuring a safe and enjoyable workplace for their fellow volunteers. To become a supervisor, you’ll need at least two years of experience being an adviser within the Citizens Advice service team.

Administrators

Our administrators ensure that the centre runs smoothly. Good support is essential for the running of any organisation, and we are no different. We have numerous administrative roles available.

We stand ready to match your skills and time available to our needs - whether it's booking appointments, operating our switchboard, or something else!

Research & Campaign Workers

Research & campaign workers use the information provided to them and then collate evidence from the problems that are brought up to Citizens Advice Medway from their clients. This helps us bring about real change through influencing local and national policy. This role is flexible and can sometimes be completed remotely.

If any of these volunteer roles sound like a good fit for you, get in touch! If you would like any further information on one, or more, of these roles or if you would like to request a Volunteer Pack, please send an email to volunteering@medwayadvice.org.uk.
