Support for the people of Medway

Eligibility

To be eligible for the rebate, you needed to meet the following conditions on 1 April 2022:

  • the property is in Council Tax bands A to D (or the property is a band E property that has a disabled person’s reduction applied, effectively reducing it to a band D)
  • the property is your sole or main residence
  • it's a property for which Council Tax is chargeable or it's exempt under the following classes:
  • class N - occupied solely by full-time students
  • class S - occupied solely by people under the age of 18
  • class U - occupied solely by those with a severe mental impairment
  • class W - an annexe occupied by a dependent relative
  • those who are liable to pay the Council Tax (or would be if the property was not exempt) are not a local council, a corporate body or other body such as a housing association, the government or governmental body.

Households that do not pay Council Tax because of Council Tax Reduction will still be eligible for the payment.

If you receive a payment and you do not meet the above eligibility criteria (for example because you moved out of the property on or before 1 April 2022), please contact ctenergyrebate@medway.gov.uk immediately so that we can advise you on how you can return the money.

Getting the £150 payment

We have paid over £12 million to more than 80,000 Medway residents.

If you are eligible and you did not apply for the rebate by the closing date on your letter or we were unable to transfer payment to your bank account, it has now been credited to your Council Tax account. You will have received a bill with revised instalments.

Discretionary scheme

There will be a discretionary scheme for those who are:

  • in bands E to H
  • not entitled under the main scheme.

Eligibility

We will pay a single payment of £150 to any household in Council Tax band E to H that:

  • receive a Council Tax Reduction
  • receive a disabled banding reduction in bands F to H
  • are entitled to a Council Tax exemption under:
  • class S - occupied solely by people under the age of 18
  • class U - occupied solely by those with a severe mental impairment.

We wrote to all eligible residents and if bank details were:

  • supplied, the money will be received in your bank account by 31 August 2022
  • not provided, the payment has been made directly to resident’s Council Tax accounts.

A one-off payment of £50 will be paid to households who live in a room within a house of multiple occupation (HMO) where:

  • the owner is liable for the Council Tax bill
  • the household are liable for the energy bills.

A one-off payment of £150 will be paid if a household is not entitled to any payment under this scheme or the mandatory scheme where a household is responsible for energy bills and suffering hardship.

Apply for a payment due to hardship or living in an HMO

Scammers

We are aware that some scammers are phoning UK households asking for bank details to pay the £150 rebate.

We will not be phoning you to ask for your details. We will be writing to you or emailing those that are eligible during May to request your bank details.

Deadline

The deadline to apply for this is 31st of August 2022. You must apply before this date to avoid losing out!
