Money Advice Service

COINS.gifDealing with money worries and debt is always a stressful and scary process. Taking debt advice is the first step but sometimes acknowledging the problem and taking this advice is also the hardest part.

At Citizens Advice Medway, we can help with this. Our Money Advice Service Debt Advice Project (MAS) is available to anyone who is experiencing financial difficulties, however large or small. MAS’s mission is to equip our clients with the knowledge and ability to feel empowered to manage their finances on their own.To get started on this, you'll first need to go through an Initial Check to determine if your case can be referred to our MAS Project. If so, we'll support you through the entire process of managing your current debts. We’ll help you determine how much you can afford to pay currently, and which debts are the most important to focus on first. With our help, you’ll no longer have to worry alone.

During your first meeting with a MAS Project Worker, they will discuss your financial situation and fully assess your needs. This will lead to a recommended course of action that will improve your state of financial affairs and ultimately lead to a resolution. Some of the methods our team uses to achieve this are self-help, discussing insolvency options, and/or referring you to another free money advice organisation that can provide ongoing support if necessary.

If you’re on low income, try using this simple budget planner to get started with managing your money better.

Citizens Advice Medway Animated Cash Point Money Advice Service.gifThe MAS Project Team is also able to help negotiate with creditors on your behalf to arrange affordable monthly repayments. However, please note, that once this is arranged, it is your responsibility to ensure these payments are continued to be made on time.

The MAS Project team can help with:

  • Determining how much income you have,
  • Identifying how you can increase your income,
  • Identifying which debts should be your top priorities (i.e. those that have the most serious consequences if you don’t pay them),
  • Providing you with a letter to use when you are writing to those you owe money to,
  • Setting up realistic payment offers,
  • & explaining the other options that are available to you (e.g. debt relief orders or individual voluntary arrangements).

In rare cases where our team is unable to assist (such as bankruptcy petitions), we will refer you to an external specialist debt agency to help.
