‘WORRIED ABOUT HOW YOU’LL BE AFFECTED BY BREXIT? CITIZENS ADVICE MEDWAY IS HERE TO HELP’
MEDWAY, UNITED KINGDOM
Last Thursday the people of the UK voted to leave the EU.
Over the weekend, and for many weeks and months to come, much will be said about the next steps for Britain and how those steps will affect you.
Citizens Advice Medway’s Chief Executive Officer, Dan McDonald, was keen to stress that the process would be a gradual one: "Of course, it is highly likely that some laws will change in the future but this will not be an immediate process. For now, everything will stay the same.
"If you’re an EU citizen living in the UK, your rights to live, work or get benefits won’t change unless the government passes new laws. If you’re a UK citizen living in the EU or travelling to the EU, your rights won’t change yet either.
"You don’t need to take any action now. Changes to the law will be announced before they happen, so you’ll have time to prepare if you’re affected.
"But, most importantly of all, this was a democratic decision taken by the people of the UK. Our role now is to ensure that you, the people that this decision will affect, are given the support that you need to make this a smooth process. Here at Citizens Advice Medway we are committed to doing all we can to ensure that this is the case. If you think that you need any advice then do not hesitate to get in touch."
If you think you’ve been discriminated against since the referendum, for example if you’ve been unfairly refused work or housing, or told your rights have changed, you should contact Citizens Advice Medway.
Citizens Advice Medway has a Hate Crime project called Individuality (0345 241 4999) that's here to help residents who may have been subject to abuse because of their nationality.
